"Spacers" in construction are used as an "addition" to the reinforcement of reinforced concrete structure and their aim is to maintain the appropriate concrete cover around the reinforcement that we want to achieve in a given structural element. For example, in the case of a reinforced concrete ceiling cast at the construction site, we have detailed information contained in the design project. Such information concerns the class of concrete, steel grade, quantity and spacing of reinforcing bars in the upper and lower reinforcement mesh, as well as the appropriate concrete cover, usually in mm. In the case of a ceiling, the concrete cover is the distance from the bottom edge of the reinforcement mesh to the formwork or the upper edge of the reinforcement mesh to the total height of the ceiling. As a consequence of not maintaining the appropriate cover, the most frequently visible cracks are on the ceiling or floor, and hence the incorrect work of a given element in the entire structure. To avoid this, we use appropriate "distances" which, for the sake of material, can be divided into plastics and concrete, or due to the purpose of horizontal (ceilings) and vertical (reinforced concrete walls).

Concrete spacers are most often used where there are heavy loads, ie .... roads, bridges, foundation slabs and footings, and basement ceilings in building construction. However, we use plastics for lighter structures, ie single-family housing, ceilings in residential floors in building construction.
